Studio practice: silhouette painting

Updated: Jan 16, 2023

During my visit to Ilkeston i took some pictures of the church in various angles. I decided to use this picture because i liked how bold and intimidating the church looked from this angle:

For my silhouette painting i traced the outline of the building with tracing paper and then transfered the sketch onto some card.

After this, i then cut out my sketch to make a stencil. I used a paintbrush to go over the stencil in oil paint using the colours black, red and yellow. However, there was one aspect of the painting that i wasn't happy with:

Because i painted my stencil in oil paint, it took longer to dry so some of the edges of my painting smudged and there were also finger prints of paint in the background. To fix this problem i decided to cut out the silhouette and stick it onto another piece of card. I then went around the edges with white paint to give the painting a cleaner look. Here are the results:

Results

I was pleased with the results of my silhouette paintings, i think the black and red colour makes the image look very strong and bold. I painted the yellow silhouette over a christian charity letter that was sent to my mum. christians are normally known for giving to charities because of their faith. Therefore, i thought this would be a great background to compliment the image. The silhouette communicates a mystery within the painting which places it in the unknown. Which could also imply that there is mystery behind the church. What i could have done better about the 3rd image is to add less layers of paint because it made the painting oversaturated which meant that the outline of the image didn't come out as strong as the first two.
