Studio practice: lino printing

Updated: Jan 16, 2023

Over the holidays i decided to do some lino prints of the memorial drinking fountain in Ilkeston. i took a picture of this structure on my visit and i was very intrigued by the figures on it as it reminded me of greek mythology gods and sculptures. Here is a picture that i took:

I wasn't able to print this image out at home because my printer was broken, so i decided to trace out the image from IPad instead. Then I transfered the sketch onto some lino.

This is what my lino looked like after carving it out, i took a fragment of the image and decided to focus on that. After i had done this, I rolled the ink out on to the lino and printed the image on to some A4 card. One of them didn't turn out as strong because i didn't apply enough ink:

After applying more ink, the rest turned out pretty strong. Here are the rest:

I ended up making 6 of the same image. here is a close up image of the print:

i ended up cutting out the image to make it look more cleaner. Overall i did like how these lino prints turned, i like how the image looks scratchy and old. It reflects the historical elements of this structure. I also enjoy that when working with lino prints, each print looks slightly different, there are always subtle differences. One of the things i would have improved about this, is to have opted for a smaller lino cutting tool, there were aspects of the image that i wasn't able to carve out properly because the cutting tool was big. Therefore certain lines were hard to cut out precisely. I also didn't have access to a printer over the holidays so I did trace this image out on my iPad however, I beliveve I would have achieved a more detailed image if I traced this photograph out on paper.
