Studio Practice: Pyrography burning on Wood

Updated: Feb 7, 2023

For our new project our theme is based on structure, I have decided to focus on the fragments of Ilkeston, it is an exploration of the architectural structures, sculptures and historical places. During my visit, I took some photographs on my phone of the church, the pub and an apartment. Here are some pictures of the buildings:

The Vaults

St Marys Church

The Harrow free house pub

I decided to use these pictures to experiment with my first art piece, i went down to the 3D workshop so that i could get these photos laser burned on to some wood. The photo had to go through photoshop so that the resolution could be altered, after that it was then set to go. Below is a video of the image being laser burned onto wood:

The swift motion of the laser reminds of how fast time goes by.

Here are the results of the laser wood pieces:

I was very impressed with how these pieces turned out, the detail on the wood made it look like a very old photograph. It even reminds of a teabag stained picture because of the dark tones which I think looks nice. The wood pieces looked very ghostly and almost like it was made in the past. It also gives off a sad mood. The idea of an image being burned into wood makes it seem like it's memory is being preserved. Others who have looked at my work have also said that the image reminds of something from past. One thing that I would improve about my work is that I would have put my third wood piece back into the laser machine for a second time, so that more detail could show as i believe it came out faint.
